SSRIs do not increase the risk of miscarriage

SSRIs do not increase the risk of miscarriage. Depression does increase the risk of miscarriage. This is such important information. The body of evidence is growing and we need continued research in this (ahem)

A serene moment as a pregnant woman rests her hands on her belly, embracing the journey of motherhood in comfortable surroundings.

There was initially a lot of fear around SSRI use during pregnancy because the original studies compared women with depression on SSRIs to women without depression not on SSRIs. The depression is what we call a confounding variable. Depression in and of itself is associated with an increased risk of miscarriage. When doing these studies, it is so important to sort out the risk of depression or mental health exposures to the fetus because we are learning more and more that exposure to mental health disorders can be detrimental to mama and baby (and second parent).
