Not everyone who takes psychiatric medication needs to see a psychiatrist.

Reasons to see a psychiatrist:

• Your PCP said they do not feel comfortable prescribing your mental health medications

• Your therapist recommended a psychiatrist

• Your mid-level provider recommended a higher level of care

• You do not feel like you are making progress with your current provider

Taking medications is not a requirement of this practice. Dr. Sorenson is very knowledgeable about alternatives to medications. She typically incorporates lifestyle and holistic options into her treatment plans and she can prioritize these treatment modalities if someone does not want to take medications.

A psychiatrist goes to medical school and learns about the entire body. Most psychiatrists focus on prescribing medications and supportive therapy.

Psychologists do not go to medical school and do not prescribe medications. Psychologists offer therapy and are usually trained in manual based and evidence based therapy modalities like: CBT, DBT, EMDR, ERP

I love complex patients. The harder you make me think, the more fun it is to treat you. I will happily sit and listen to your psychiatric concerns and connect the dots if they relate to any of your medical problems. I get really excited about psychopharmacology, I will think about your care and how to optimize it with as few medications as possible. It is very important for all providers to minimize the medications a patient is on to avoid complications from too many medications. 

You do not have to be a neurodiverse female to see me. Working with complex female patients has made me an even better psychiatrist for everyone else, especially for men.

I am happy to work with all sexes, genders, minorities, and sexualities.

I do not take insurance because I would rather give high quality care at a discounted rate than deal with insurance companies.
