What is Zuranolone?

The first and only oral FDA approved medication for postpartum depression.

How does it work?

It works on GABA which is the neurotransmitter that calms the brain.

It helps replace the allopregnanolone drop that occurs after birth. This is the hormone drop thought to be the cause of postpartum depression.

How do you take it?

You can take it up to one year postpartum.

Course: 14 days at 50 mg once nightly

The prescription needs to go to a specialty pharmacy and can be mailed to your home.

There are directions for providers on how to prescribe it on the company website.

How long does it take to work?

It can improve depression in just a few days.

What are the side effects?

It can be very sedating and make you very sleepy. Having back up childcare while on this medication is recommended.

What are the risks?

There is a small risk of addiction and misuse because this medication works on GABA.

Is it safe for pregnancy?

Zuranolone is not considered safe for pregnancy.

Is it safe for breastfeeding?

Zuranolone is considered safe for breastfeeding. It’s in the breast milk a small amount. The amount is considered safe, but you still have to monitor baby for side effects. Common side effects would be poor feeding or being sleepy. Younger babies will be more sensitive to side effects than older babies.
