Relationship Advice

Relationship Advice:

If I could tell my younger self one thing it would be that relationships are not supposed to feel like asteroids colliding. They are supposed to feel like asteroids flying parallel and bound to infinity (and beyond).

As a psychiatrist and human my favorite love poem is this: Once the realization is accepted that even between the closest human beings infinite distances continue, a wonderful living side by side can grow, if they succeed in loving the distance between them which makes it possible for each to see the other whole against the sky.

Rilke Rainer Maria

A joyful couple enjoying a warm embrace and sharing a tender moment outdoors, with lush greenery in the background.

You want to feeling tethered to your partner, but not consumed by them. To feel consumed is exciting, but it’s really just an activation of your fight or flight nervous system. True love is calm and steady and respectful. Respecting the infinite distances between the two of you, so that you both can thrive.
