Complicated Feelings around the Death of Charlie Kirk

I'm experiencing complicated feelings around the death of Charlie Kirk. Here’s what I have to say. I have a deep respect for gun owners and acknowledge the rights that come with responsible ownership. However, I firmly believe that there can be reasonable limits placed on this ownership that will not significantly impact your daily life or your enjoyment of your rights. Establishing these limits is crucial for the safety and well-being of our children and ourselves as well. Setting such boundaries is not about infringing on rights; rather, it is about creating a safer environment for everyone, especially for our babies and children who deserve to grow up in a world free from the fear of violence and harm.

Children in colorful shirts run joyfully through a grassy field, surrounded by trees under a cloudy sky, expressing energy and freedom.

I can appreciate the passion that comes with being a gun owner, but when it comes to the safety of children, my priorities are clear: babies and children always win any debate with me. Their innocence and right to a safe upbringing far outweigh any other considerations. I'm not trying to be hurtful or offensive, or say that all people need to feel the way I do. We must recognize that we do not need our children to grow up witnessing a society where we hurt each other, where conflicts are resolved through violence rather than dialogue. It is our responsibility to model peaceful coexistence and to ensure that the next generation inherits a world that prioritizes their safety and well-being over divisive issues.

Let us work together to find common ground, where the rights of responsible gun owners are respected while also ensuring that our legislative measures effectively protect our children. After all, their future is our collective responsibility, and it is imperative that we take steps to prevent unnecessary tragedies. By engaging in constructive conversations and advocating for sensible regulations, we can help ensure that our children grow up in an environment that fosters peace, understanding, and safety. This is my ultimate goal as a psychiatrist, children and adults need to feel safe in order to thrive. We will never thrive and reach our full potential with the underlying threat of gun violence.
