Having a healthy mama is really what’s most important for baby’s development both during pregnancy and postpartum. The physical and mental well-being of the mother plays a crucial role in the overall health of the developing fetus, newborn and growing children. During pregnancy, a mother's mental health can significantly influence not only her own well-being but also the health outcomes for her baby. Stress, anxiety, and depression can lead to complications such as preterm birth, low birth weight, and developmental delays. Therefore, it is essential that mothers prioritize their health, seeking support and treatment when necessary, to create the best possible environment for their child’s growth and development.

Research has shown that untreated mental health conditions can pose a greater risk to both mother and baby than the potential risks associated with medications prescribed to manage these conditions. This results in many of the medications for mental health being deemed lower risk to baby and mama than the conditions they treat. For instance, certain antidepressants, when taken under the guidance of a healthcare provider, can help stabilize a mother's mood, thereby improving her ability to care for herself and her baby (and engage in prenatal care).
It is vital for expectant and new mothers to have open conversations with their healthcare providers about their mental health, discussing any concerns and exploring safe treatment options. By doing so, they can ensure they are not only taking care of their own mental health but also fostering a nurturing environment for their child’s development.
