Only 2% of mammals menstruate the way women do and we don’t even bother to consistently study cycling hormones in animal models that approximate women. Even though there are rodent options, specifically the spiny mouse, that would be reasonable alternatives to rats and mice. I know animal testing is a difficult subject for some people, but if we are going to do animal testing at least make their “sacrifice” worth it and generalizable to the population you are trying to study!
